Populate and Perish in the Northern Rivers

Paradoxically Tweed Shire Council area hosts the highest vertabrate biodiversity in Australia, and is also subject to the highest population growth rates in Australia. The Far North Coast Regional Strategy 2006 proposes that developing 60% of the land east of the Motorway to the sea is ecologically sustainable, and identifies substantial areas for potential green fields subdivision. Beyond a vague reference to "contain the spread of development" there is no consideration of an Urban Consolidation Strategy which could absorb population growth for some years, taking advantage of existing infrastructure through allowing dual occupancy subdivision on existing township allotments.

The Joint Venturers (NSW Government and LEDA Holdings) proposals in this assault on the environmental values of Australia's Green Cauldron are unacceptable (Regulation 8 Tweed Local Environment Plan 2000) and unsustainable (Regulation 5 Tweed Local Environment Plan 2000),
